A rental marketplace taken to launch
RentMy · two-sided rental marketplace
OpenKit took on an unfamiliar codebase and shipped the marketplace, with payments, identity checks and a dispute route in the first version.
Overview
RentMy is a rental marketplace where people list what they own and other people rent it: cameras, tools, bikes, the things that sit unused most of the year. OpenKit picked the platform up mid-build, on code already written in a stack it had not chosen, and took it to launch. The live marketplace recorded more than 10,000 sign-ups in three months.

Approach
What OpenKit built
- A booking calendar that reserved each item for specific dates and scheduled both the collection and the return. OpenKit fixed it before anything else.
- Payments, deposits and discount codes, with payouts released on a schedule so the lender was paid on the right side of the handover.
- Identity verification, so a lender handing a camera to someone they had never met knew the account on the other end belonged to a checked person.
- A dispute route both sides agreed to in advance. If an item came back damaged, the lender raised an extra charge and both parties placed what they thought it was worth on a sliding scale. Where that did not settle it, a mediator stepped in, with the deposit already held to settle against.
- A redesigned interface with messaging and reviews.
- Listing and landing pages rendered on the server so search engines could rank them, and a web app renters could keep on their phone’s home screen without an app-store download.
- A platform engineered against RentMy’s stated load requirement of 30,000 concurrent users.
- An admin panel and CMS for the RentMy team, with analytics and email tools so they could see what people did and follow up.
Search
Search by availability
Search filtered by category, location, availability and price, so the results were items a renter could book on the dates they needed.
Result
Run by RentMy’s own team
The RentMy team took over running the marketplace from the admin panel and CMS, managing accounts, listings and transactions themselves. RentMy’s founder had reviewed every flow as OpenKit built it, so the people running the marketplace had seen it working before it went live.
